Are you interested in what a war crime is and what a chain of evil is; how the investigation of crimes in the Balkans was carried out; and what similarities can be seen between polarization in Slovak society, the Balkan wars, and Russian aggression in Ukraine?
Come on Monday (November 18, from 17:00 to 18:30) to the grounds of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of Comenius University at Mlynské luhy 4 in Bratislava, where a lecture with discussion in English on the topic: ‘On Crimes against Humanity in the Balkans’ will take place, organized by the Center for European Policy (CEP) in cooperation with the Ambrela platform and FSEV UK. The lecture will be given by Vladimír Dzuro – a former investigator at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
In his talk, Mr. Dzuro will take you to places only a few hours’ drive by car from Slovakia, where thirty years ago the most terrible war crimes since the Second World War took place. You will also learn what humans are capable of when we stop controlling ourselves; and how the mentioned Balkan wars and manifestations of Russian aggression beyond our borders affect us today in Central Europe. A lively discussion between the lecturer and the attending students and the broader public will follow.
The lecture with discussion is part of Global Education Week (TGV), which in the second half of November is implemented in Slovakia by Ambrela with its members and observers, with the support of SR through SlovakAid and GENE. The platform of development organizations – Ambrela is an umbrella organization of 30 mostly non-governmental organizations in Slovakia, which focus on development cooperation, humanitarian aid, and sustainable development at home and/or abroad, with half of them focusing on global education. Ambrela actively represents the common interests of its members and observers at home and abroad; besides advocacy and capacity-building, it is also involved in public information (raising awareness about ODA — official development assistance of SR in the world). Ambrela's flagship events are the Ambrela Development Forum (ADF) and Global Education Week (TGV).
The Center for European Policy (## CEP) is a member of the Ambrela platform, active in the area of global education. It has long been engaged in understanding the integration process in Europe, strengthening active citizenship, and preventing the radicalization of young people. It carries out projects in Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina (since 2004), Ukraine (since 2008), and the Czech Republic (2011). Since 2017 it has been involved in projects focused on issues of radicalization and de-radicalization against the background of developments in former Yugoslavia in the 1980s and 1990s of the previous century. CEP focuses its activities on sensitizing young people to manifestations of discrimination in public discourse and creating effective educational materials.
