On 20.2.2024 in Bratislava, the Slovak platform Ambrela, bringing together humanitarian and development organisations that support the displaced population to the east of our borders, organized the event ‘Tri roky vojny’. Its program consisted of a presentation of three years of support in Ukraine, a discussion on vision and plans for the reconstruction of Ukraine, and the awarding of personalities from the humanitarian community helping our eastern neighbour (including the media).
On the occasion of the sad third anniversary of Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, the Ambrela platform organized in the Bratislava church Klarisiek an event titled ‘Tri roky vojny’. Daniel Kaba, Executive Secretary of Ambrela, addressed those present in person, as did the Deputy Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia, Radim Dvořák, and, remotely, also Oleksandr Mishchenko, deputy to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
Part of the event were photo and video presentations from the field of Ambrela’s humanitarian organisations, a panel discussion on the theme ‘Reconstruction of Ukraine – do we stay?’, and the awarding of personalities in five categories (including the media). “We should also publicly recognise the work of photojournalists and reporters who cover humanitarian topics and bring the public objective information about crises in the world from the field. They are also part of a broader humanitarian community helping Ukraine,” explained Daniel Kaba from Ambrela. The award ceremony itself was organised by the platform Ambrela, with the Embassy of Ukraine in the Slovak Republic presenting the awards this year as well.
In the Humanitarian worker category, Zuzana Ulman from the organisation STEP IN received an award. The organisation operates in Dnipro and travels to remote areas through mobile clinics, where it provides essential care to people in need, as well as necessary training to medical teams. In the Official (public administration) category, Alfréd Krátky personally accepted the award from the hands of the Ukrainian Ambassador in the Slovak Republic, Myroslav Kastran. Until 2023, as head of the Crisis Situations Logistics Base in Vajnory within the crisis management division of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic, he led one of the key operational components of state humanitarian aid. In the Journalist category, reporter Jana Čavojská received the award. She has traveled through almost eighty countries around the world in search of stories about people in difficult life situations, and since the beginning of the war in Ukraine she has regularly crossed over the border of our eastern neighbour to provide needed support to its population. In the Photographer category, filmmaker Juraj Mravec was awarded. In addition to photography, he also works with camera and direction of documentary films, and his last three films Mir vam, Stratený domov a Mir nam were made in Ukraine. The fifth award was won in the Business partner (good company) category by the Slovak Savings Bank Foundation for its long-term commitment to supporting humanitarian activities through various initiatives and innovations. The organizer of the event was the Platform of Development Organisations – Ambrela, which brings together 30 largely non-governmental organisations in Slovakia that work in humanitarian aid, development cooperation, global education, and sustainable development – both at home and abroad. One third of them are actively focused specifically on humanitarian aid for internally displaced and vulnerable people directly in Ukraine. The event Tri roky vojny was implemented by Ambrela with support from the Slovak Republic through SlovakAid, the EIB, the Representation of the European Commission in Slovakia, the Embassy of Ukraine in the Slovak Republic, and the EU via the Stronger roots programme.
