In 2015, 193 governments from around the world (including all EU member states) agreed to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 'Leave No One Behind' is a fundamental principle of the agenda and includes a promise to bring the most vulnerable, oppressed and marginalized people to the fore as much as possible. However, anyone who has watched the scenes from the refugee camps on the Greek islands in the media can see that male and female refugees are still among the most marginalized.
There is a lot of discussion about the meaning of the principle 'Leave no one behind'. However, refugees do not usually figure in this discussion. It must be clear to everyone that the goals of the 2030 Agenda will not be achieved if the EU does not change its policies and procedures regarding refugees and recognize their human rights. The organization Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) therefore published the report 'SDGs and Migration in the European Union' / 'Global goals and migration in the EU' to analyze in more detail the connection between the goals of sustainable development and the situation of refugees in the EU.
The document consists of a chapter on sustainable development goals, migration, policy coherence and responsibility of EU member states in the field of human rights. The following are individual reports on the fulfillment of the SDGs and the monitoring of migration in six specific EU member states - involved in the 'Global Goals and Migration' project as well as the 'Faces of Migration' campaign: Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The documents for SR were prepared by the Umbrella platform. The study deals with an overview of migration in the EU, migration and protection within the EU, as well as the response of the EU and member states to the issue of refugees. The New Pact on Migration and Asylum is mentioned, as well as the role of Frontex in situations of violations of the human rights of people on the run when crossing EU borders. At the end of the report, you will also find current and future challenges along with important recommendations for EU member states.
