The beginning of the third millennium is a period of rapid development of the social sciences. Social work is no exception. The development of the field is advancing both in its educational and scientific dimensions. Ethics in social work is also an inseparable part of social work. Ethical questions acquire significant importance in the conditions of a postmodern society, in which moments of a value crisis are evident.
Social work is one of the youngest social sciences, having adapted to many social situations and to many social regimes. Over the last two decades, the development of this field has expanded so much that it reaches into many social areas of society. Social work is conceived as an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scientific discipline.
This scholarly monograph is the work of authors who are intensively developing social work in difficult conditions in Slovakia, but not only there. It is also being developed at many detached workplace locations around the world. Yet, it is not only the authors of this publication, but the authors of all presented papers. They are people who care about the development of social work and devote truly substantial effort to it. Thanks are due to them for their diligence, hard work, enthusiasm, excitement, and inexhaustible energy. Only in this way can any science move one step forward and thus become even more useful to those in need.
The publication is the result of an international scientific conference held in the autumn of 2010 at the site of the branch department of Vysoké škole zdravotnictví a sociální práce sv. Alžběty in Bratislava, specifically at the unit of Ústav sociální práce sv. Pátra Pia in Piešťany. As co-organizers of this conference were Institut A. Radlinského in Dolný Kubín, which is an integral part of Pedagogická fakulta Katolické univerzity v Ružomberku. In addition, the Austrian partner, Collegium Elizabethinum Vienna, is prominent. Not least, Institut mezioborových studií Brno, Czech Republic, served as a major co-organizer of the conference. This workplace belongs to the prestigious scientific and educational institutions in the field of social pedagogy in the Central European environment. May the publication contribute to the development of the scientific discipline, the field of study, and this area of practice.
