1989 was a turning point. Many people called it a year of freedom, and some are still saddened by this change. In any case, it was the year of the greatest changes in society, which positively changed the course of events in Europe and reached the whole world. In the history of our state, a non-violent change of regime took place and society could “take a breath.” This collection has the ambition to identify and describe changes in the view of the human person and society, the economy, management, education, and science. This year we also remember the days when St. John Paul II visited Poprad, and also his sentence addressed to us: “Do not be afraid!” Some say the twentieth century ended with his death; this is open to expert discussion, but certainly his life and ministry as head of the Church caused the changes at the end of the twentieth century to happen. The papers in this collection do not aim to evaluate, but to describe changes, so that they are captured and remain as a legacy, or as a perspective on a past era from the viewpoint of our time. I want to express my thanks to colleagues and all those who contributed to making this volume possible and to enabling the conference on the social legacy of John Paul II to take place. It itself was hard-fought, but we believe it bore fruit. I wish the reader to find here what enriches them; if they find what they dislike, may they not act on it, and may they rejoice in true values and also in the gift of freedom.
