In early June 2014 in Kružľov, the non-governmental organization Člověk v tísni Slovensko held a series of educational meetings on the prevention of and defense against unfair trading practices. Almost 30 pensioners from various locations in the Bardejov district were trained.
The aim of the project was to provide a practical and theoretical overview of the most common manipulative and pressure techniques used to influence consumer decision-making and to provide professional guidance and space to practice effective defensive strategies against mental manipulation. The pensioners also gained basic legislative and information skills related to consumer protection and consumer rights. Lectors of the project were staff members of Člověk v tísni Slovensko who work at the Community Center in Sveržov, where they are involved in social counseling and experiential education for young people, as well as adults. “We are increasingly facing more and more different commercial scams in our work, and retirees in particular belong to the most vulnerable group of people. That was the reason we decided to organize this kind of informational and educational meeting,” explained Iva Grejtáková, coordinator of the Sveržov Community Center.
