The aim of the international conference and the presented proceedings is to provide a space for the exchange of information, experience and the latest knowledge of scientific workers and experts from the practice of social service homes in the field of the quality of life of persons with mental disabilities in these facilities, and in this way to contribute to the collection of professional knowledge in the interest of normalization, increasing the quality of life and optimal development of clients with mental disabilities. Honorable ladies, gentlemen, distinguished guests, In Geneva in 1993, the World Health Organization defined quality of life as "the perception of one's own position in life in the context of culture and value systems with regard to life goals, expectations, standards and interests". He further states that this concept is influenced in a complex way by the physical health and psychological state of a person, as well as the level of his independence and relations with important features of the environment.
The quality of life and human rights of clients placed in social service facilities is a topic that is of constant interest to us. The questions of the transformation of social services, the introduction of quality standards of social services and the quality of life of clients brought us to this professional conference.
In connection with the topic of our conference, I consider it important to emphasize that one of the significant signs of the current development of society is the occurrence of sociopathological phenomena ranging from minor behavioral disorders, crises or frustrations, through serious offenses leading to criminality and drug addiction. They have different etiopathogenesis, but basically they all destroy a person, his personality, interfere in the life of families, destroy their system, pathogenize social roles.
It has been found that supportive relationships in the social environment dampen the harmful effects of stress on a person. If we add to this the positive effect of an atmosphere of understanding and support in the social environment, then we ourselves and our clients would be able to handle life's burdens.
For the first time in the history of the Home of Social Services in Osadno, I have the honor to open the first professional conference with international participation, which is organized by the Home of Social Services in Osadno, the Department of Special Pedagogy of the Pedagogical Faculty of the University of Prešov in Prešov in cooperation with the Department of Social Affairs of the Prešov Self-Governing Region.
