Marriage as the legal union of a man and a woman exists in all societies. However, this does not mean that most people get married or get married, but in every human society there is a socially accepted type of union between a man and a woman, which is called marriage. Marriage is a permanent union between a man and a woman, which gives the partners mutual, exclusive sexual and economic rights and confers a social identity on the children born of this union. (Murphy, 1999).
Despite all the developmental changes in the partner relationship in the current post-industrial world, marriage continues to be the orientation point of many partner cohabitations (Kráľová, 2007). From the beginning, Christianity defined the relationship between spouses as love, which can be considered one of its most historically significant contributions, in contrast to the Old Testament world or classical Rome, which did not consider love when defining family relationships. I. Možný states that even though historians and anthropologists present the opinion of all non-Christian societies that building the institution of marriage, which is supposed to ensure the physical and social reproduction of society on feelings, is too risky, mutual love between spouses is still considered a condition for successful coexistence between a man and a woman in a family after more than 2000 years (Možný, In: Köverová, 2003).
The changes in demographic and reproductive behavior that appeared in the countries of Northern and Western Europe in the second half of the 20th century, and to which the countries of Southern, Central and Eastern Europe joined in certain modifications at the end of the last century, can be considered as one of the most significant in the entire population history. For this reason, we call them "revolutionary" and the period in which they took place is referred to as the second demographic revolution. Despite these developmental changes in the partnership relationship in the current post-industrial world, marriage continues to be a recognized and accepted form of most partnerships.
What is the situation in the field of perception, but also the realization of marital and partner relations in the territory of the Slovak Republic from the point of view of demographic and statistical data, but also from the point of view of empirical scientific research, was one of the goals of the realized conference. We believe that its results will appeal to the professional and scientific community. Another goal was to reflect on the social, philosophical and legal contexts of individual acceptable and feasible forms of coexistence. Likewise, the meeting of professionals at the conference wanted to provoke an interdisciplinary discussion about the social aspects of the Christian vision of marriage as a unified and indissoluble heterosexual union and, not least, to propose recommendations for practice in the field of: practical social work and other applied sciences in the field of education, upbringing and other human care, state social policy in the Slovak Republic, research and education in the scientific field of social work and other related fields.
We believe that the aforementioned professional and scientific space has also opened up on the academic ground, as evidenced by the contributions and conclusions of the conference presented in this collection.
