Analysis of color changes in composite materials due to polymerization

The development of knowledge in dentistry, technical equipment, continuous research, discussions and studies has brought with it a wide range of procedures and materials aimed at achieving the best possible aesthetics and functionality. For this purpose, photocomposite materials are most often used in dental practice. The longevity, functionality, biocompatibility and aesthetics of the filling depend on a correctly chosen diagnosis, carefully prepared cavity, proper material selection and correct processing. Ideally, the color of an aesthetic filling should not be affected by the polymerization mechanism, nor by aging of the filling caused by constantly changing conditions in the oral cavity. We carried out our own cross-sectional study with the aim of assessing color changes during the polymerization process of the most commonly used photocomposite materials. On the basis of the observation results we concluded that color changes occurred in all composite resins regardless of type and brand. The composite materials were characterized by a shift into the blue region of color space and a decrease in yellow saturation.
