Location: Burundi, Rutovu Type of aid: A reconstructed hospital that was abandoned by Cuban doctors during the war. Slovak doctors provide consultations in general medicine as well as dental and gynecological medicine. In addition, the hospital’s inpatient section is also functioning and is divided into 4 departments (surgery, gynecology, pediatrics and internal medicine), an operating theatre and a maternity room. Project significance: The number of patients treated in the hospital rose, one year after it restarted, from practically zero to 749. According to an MSF survey from 2004, one in five inhabitants of Burundi has never visited a health center in their life because they could not afford to. The goal of the project is that money no longer limits the fight against diseases in this country tested by genocide.
