From the perspective of the reviewer, what is particularly valued in this work is the deep, almost unsettling description of the everyday encounter and strategies of settlement residents in an unequal conflict with a different, opposing approach to life of the “whites”, says the review of the new monograph presented here (Lužica, 2013). The book’s author, Michal Kozubík, is a professional assistant at Ústav romologických štúdií v Nitre. He is a graduate of the Social Work study program focused on the Romani community (2006). The book can be divided thematically into three parts: in the first, the author deals with basic terminological starting points: Is it better to use the term Gypsy or Rom? Are we non-Romani or gadžo? The author tries to find answers to several similar questions. The next part of the monograph presents an overview of Roma life in the history of selected municipalities and the city of Poprad. The majority of the data comes from municipal and village chronicles. The final part is a summary of field research conducted in 2012–2013 within the context of the qualitative methodological approach of so-called Grounded Theory. The findings and recommendations are presented by the author within the limits of social work. “The text is attractive for the interested reader. It is stylistically polished, professionally learned, filled with reflections and observations, with a paradigmatic note of sadness.” (Lužica, 2013) We believe that the book will be, for you attentive readers, an excursion into the everyday reality of settlements and will bring you closer to the difficult social situation in which its inhabitants live. The overall impression of the monograph is reinforced by field research photographs.
