This publication presents original professional articles in the field of social work, which were created on the occasion of the mini-conference "Social work possibilities at the beginning of the 21st century", which was held on April 25, 2005 by the Department of Social Work and Social Policy of the Faculty of Education of the University of Hradec Králové.

PREFACE

This publication presents original professional articles in the field of social work, created on the occasion of the mini-conference Possibilities of Social Work at the Beginning of the 21st Century, which was held on April 25, 2005 by the Department of Social Work and Social Policy of the Faculty of Education of the University of Hradec Králové. The intention was to organize a meeting of experts from the ranks of academic workers of various university workplaces from the whole Czech Republic and from the ranks of social work practitioners and thus create a space for field discussion. Among the contributors to this collection are, among others, experts from the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University in Prague, the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University in Brno, the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences of the University of Ostrava and the organizing Faculty of Pedagogy of the University of Hradec Králové. Practical tools for working with delinquent youth and expected changes in alternative punishments in connection with the recodification of Czech criminal law are presented by the staff of the Probation and Mediation Service, Hradec Králové Center. The topic of the mini-conference was not strictly determined in advance, rather we wanted, in an essentially inductive way, to give room for the registered experts to express themselves and thus get to the topics and problems that workers from various workplaces across the country currently consider to be the most important. Contributions that have not been presented are also included, but even in these cases they are original texts created on the occasion of this event. The result is the profiled structure of the publication as follows. In part I, some topics related to social services are discussed, especially the need for their evaluation and the issue of their financing. The theoretically processed topics are also characteristic of part II, which defines the basic manifestations of late-modern society and touches on postmodern social work, including the ever-current and emotion-provoking questions of the social worker's professional identity. III. part is a collection of articles that respond to new risks and describe new approaches or specific tools applicable in the practice of social work. This publication also contains professional texts (part IV.) that were created on the occasion of the seminar on the impact of the recodification of Czech criminal law on the field of social work at Hradec Král ová University, which preceded the mini-conference. The fifth part of the publication consists of the "student section", where theoretical works and conclusions from research are presented, in which they either participated or are themselves. Possibilities of social work at the beginning of the 21st century were realized by students from various departments of the Faculty of Education of the University of Hradec Králové, which are close to social work in their focus. The publication closes with a report on the awarding of the best volunteers in the Králové-Hradec Krai region (part VI). The announcement of the winners of this competition closed the mini-conference itself and thus connected the mainly academic event with the "pure" practice of social work in an interesting way. The hundreds of individual authors were not shortened by the editor. The method of bibliographic citation was unified, the method usual in the English language environment was used.
