Foreword In the opening part of the fourth conference of the Hradec Social Work Days, an interesting comparison of this conference to periods of human life was heard. From the point of view of developmental psychology, we were in the fourth year of life, which corresponds to the period of a person's preschool age. We were faced with tasks such as improving skills, developing arguments, orientation in space and perception of gender roles. We tried to fulfill all these development tasks when we worked on improving the organizational background of the conference, we chose the highly topical topic of social work, we invited a wide range of experts from practice and academia, and we supported the reflection of gender issues in the conference context. To what extent we managed to fulfill these development tasks, let the participants of the Hradecky Days judge first of all. However, since self-evaluation is also part of the evaluation, we want to highlight three fundamental moments of our conference. The first is the thematic focus of the conference on "Social work between help and control". We perceive the topic of social work ambivalence as topical and essential for several years. When we entered the field of social work education at the turn of the millennium, we as students were often worried by the questions of students: "What are these social work methods?". The students wanted to hear clear instructions on how to proceed when variant A occurs and how in the case of variant B. And we as teachers could not answer, while we attributed this ignorance to our lack of practice, lack of education and indecisiveness. Not only the world of social work students but also those who teach it has been largely colonized by the paradigm of technical disciplines. For most of us, the publication of Laan's book Questions of Legitimacy of Social Work, which reframed our previous insecurities into a completely new context, marked a fundamental turning point. It turned out that these uncertainties were an intuitively correct hunch, that it is not possible to create simplified universal instructions to solve the infinitely different situations in human lives. However, only in Laan's book did the fundamental idea appear that professionalism means the ability to deal with the uncertainty of choice and that the key method of social work is actually thinking.

Over time, we also felt the desire to distinguish social work from other helping professions and found that its uniqueness lies, among other things, in the constant, whether reflected or not, balancing between help and control. This led us to the idea of ​​organizing the Hradec Social Work Days precisely on the questions of how social workers reflect on the aspects of help and control in the performance of their work and how they deal with them. Issues of power and authority of social workers or the need and methods of their legitimization could not remain aside.

The second point that we want to emphasize is the effort to connect the world of practice with the academic world. The aloofness of the academic world from the problems of practitioners is sometimes rightfully criticized not only here but also abroad, where social work has a continuous tradition. For this reason too, we set ourselves the goal of mediating a dialogue between the two worlds on the topic of aid and control. We consider the third important moment of the Hradecky Days to be the support of reflection on gender issues in social work. Just as a preschool child begins to realize the differences between men and women, we also begin to reflect that social work is not a gender-neutral profession, that it is a space where stereotypical expectations and actions are applied, just like in the entire social world, and that these aspects of social work need to be examined and made visible.

Tento sborník ze IV. The social work days of Hradec tell about the results of our efforts to cope with the developmental tasks of preschool age. At the same time, we tried to go beyond our mental age and create space for the application of a wide range of opinions and experiences, which can be mutually inconsistent or even contradictory and with which we do not always identify. We leave the critical reflection of individual texts to the mind of the reader.
