In 2010, within the University of Health and Social Work St. Alžbety started the tradition of "applied conferences" held in Piešťany, that is, conferences whose goal is to apply selected topics to social work. After the successful conference "Applied ethics in social work" it is the II. year, this time focused on applied social pathology in social work. Its goal is to present current research and professional studies of socio-pathological phenomena with regard to their prevention, elimination, or mitigation of negative consequences through the profession of social work.

Currently, several teachers and workplaces of VŠZaSP St. Elizabeth paid particular attention to social pathology. This is understood as a subfield of several scientific disciplines, especially sociology, social work, criminology and social pedagogy, and as a systematic science dealing with those deviant social phenomena that society recognizes and marks as undesirable, negative and harmful for individuals, families, groups, communities and the whole society. In February of this year, VŠZaSP St. Alžbety in Žilina, a conference focused on socio-pathological phenomena in the context of the family, the output of which was the collection Hardy – Dudášová – Vranková – Hrašková Sociálna patologija rodiny (2011). In August of this year, the monograph Mátel – Schavel et al was published on the grounds of the University. Applied Social Pathology in Social Work (2011). It is the work of several university teachers, in which ten socio-pathological phenomena are presented with special emphasis on prevention and social work intervention. And finally, thirdly, the proceedings of the conference in Piešťany Mátel – Janechová – Roman (eds.) Social pathology and social work intervention (2011) will be published in October. The presented collection contains 49 contributions, the authors of which are university teachers and doctoral students from several Slovak and Czech universities, as well as social workers from practice. We hope that social workers and students of social work will find in it rich inspiration for the theory and practice of social work.
