Collection of contributions from the conference entitled Non-violent violence - Let's talk about rights, which was held on March 23, 2016 in the City Hall in Nitra.

INTRODUCTORY WORDS

Violence has many forms, it is impossible to determine which one is the most serious. The United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women from 1993 defines it as any gender-based act that leads or could lead to physical, sexual and psychological harm or injury to women, including threats of such acts, intimidation or arbitrary restriction of freedom in public and private life.

The Nonviolent Conference on Violence set a very challenging goal with its name. Talk about violence non-violently. Is it okay? Even if violence evokes in us various emotions that we can hardly label as non-violent?

Discussions on the offered lecture topics and workshops of the conference showed very succinctly that it is possible.

She opened the topics of domestic and gender-based violence with an emphasis on two parallel areas of problems: human rights and addictions. We can talk about a serious violation of human rights. Violations of these rights, as well as signs of domestic and gender-based violence, are also found in the field of addictions, concerning partners, children and parents of dependent persons. So, if we start from the thesis that violence is any form of harm, manifestation of dominance, threats, abuse of power, physical and sexual coercion, then we should start more seriously uncovering the big and small dramas that take place hidden behind the doors of apartments and homes. One of the possibilities is the meeting of experts, the networking of individual institutions and the creation of a support network for all those who find the courage to face violence and solve problems that are often intractable from the outside. This aspect was also stimulated by the Non-violent conference on violence.

Violence is often preceded by phrases that try to cover it up. Many prejudices and myths operate in it, which legitimize a certain level of violence. I am convinced that for this reason, the reactions of the neighborhood do not adequately reflect the needs of the victims of violence. That is why we need to talk about violence. And speak OPENLY and NON-VIOLENTLY.

In accordance with the idea of ​​the French Enlightenment writer and philosopher Denis Diderot: "We should lead people to the truth by reason and not by force", I wish all readers of this collection only an honest contact with the truth.
