Proceedings of the conference entitled "Cooperation of helping professions in palliative and hospice care", which was held in Bradejov in 2011 in cooperation with the University of Health and Social Work St. Alžbety in Bratislava, the Detached Office of the Queen of Peace from Medžugoria Bardejov, Mother Teresa's Hospice in Bardejov and the Civic Association Hospice of God's Mercy.
PREFACE
Dear conference participants, dear readers!
On behalf of the organizers of this conference, please accept a warm greeting and a sincere welcome on behalf of the organizers, wishing you a successful, pleasant and mostly working stay in our beautiful city. Why Bardejov?
The main organizer of this conference is the ZaSP University of St. Alžbety Bratislava, DP Bardejov, which since its inception, in addition to its pedagogical and educational mission, has set several other priorities, including organizing various professional-scientific conferences in cooperation with other important institutions. Their basic goal is to pass on the rich knowledge and experience acquired and so much needed nowadays to others, in this case especially to a professional audience.
This year, as a result of the constant increase of the elderly and the sick, with this phenomenon in mind, they prudently decided to hold this conference, the participants of which will not only point out the current deplorable state in this area, but perhaps also suggest a path or measures for the future. For this reason, they approached the management of the first Slovak Hospice of Mother Teresa in Bardejov to prepare it in close cooperation with them. Together, they approached several important personalities who deal with this issue and have a lot of experience with it. That's why we are very happy that, in addition to the Slovak elite, including the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic, specialists from the Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine, as well as leading representatives of the Slovak clergy, are participating in it. It is also a significant benefit that representatives of renowned companies supplying medical devices and aids are also present (even actively). We greatly appreciate their serious approach and we look forward to cooperating with them in the future as well. An important factor of the conference is that it raises not only medical, theological, economic questions, but also from other social spheres, and that is why we believe that this meeting of ours will bring the expected benefit to everyone.
We meet in Bardejov, with a population of over 33,000, located in a picturesque environment surrounded by forests and mountains. The surrounding nature and the people living in it left a mark of extraordinary beauty and rich history. It was given the shine and glory of the Middle Ages, which was reflected in the proud name "free royal city" (1376). He is given the admiration and respect of his contemporaries. It is a city that has always valued rare, wise and educated people, because several enlightened people and important thinkers emerged from its ranks who influenced the events of society at the time (priest Ján Andraščík, spa doctor Mikuláš Atlas, musician Jozef Grešák, printer Dávid Gutgesel, musicians Július and Oldřich Hemerkovci, carver Moric Holzer, musician Béla Kéler, historian Viktor Miskovszký, pedagogue Leonard St"ockel, theologian and magistrate Gejza Žebrácky and others). The first written mention of Bardejov is from 1241, i.e. 770 years ago. It survived progress and glory, boom and decline, prosperity and tragedies (fires, plague epidemics, wars and other disasters), but it never fell to its knees. And thanks to the already mentioned wise people - magistrates, scholars, vedators, philosophers and other enlightened people as well as merchants and artisans (there were more than 50 guilds in it) always managed to rise and maintain themselves at a significant level. We Bardejov people are extremely proud and proud of our ancestors, who were able to create incalculable cultural values, which they can share with everyone who wants to know and discover today to state that the city managed to preserve its heritage, save its monuments through reconstruction and put it on a spiritual and cultural-social pedestal and the eminence of Slovakia and Central Europe. Aegis to the minor basilica as well as the entry of the historical part with the Jewish suburbia into the World Heritage List (both events took place in the jubilee year 2000). Several landmarks contributed to this (the aforementioned basilica with 11 original altars, fortification fortifications with bastions and barbicans, a square with a Gothic-Renaissance town hall, a humanistic gymnasium, the first Slovak exhibition of icons, the first Slovak open-air museum, as well as other exhibitions in the Šariš Museum, historically rare documents in the elementary school archive and other landmarks that are worth seeing.
It is also our first Slovak hospice, Mother Teresa's Hospice in Bardejovská Nová Ves. After all, it is these beautiful and health-giving springs with 13 springs, the Bardejov Spa, where, in addition to the aforementioned open-air museum, there is also the first Pillar of Peace in Slovakia, a wonderful statue of Empress Elizabeth/Sisi, etc.. You can see for yourself the wonderful nature and environment in which a rare and ideal symbiosis of healing mineral springs combines with a favorable climate and even better medical and human care.
So this is our city, in which we warmly welcome you. Staying there represents a certain oasis of silence and peace, a balm for a sore soul. It is a sort of intersection of three worlds, three cultures. Rusticity alternates with grandeur and vice versa. And above everything is the experience of the wisdom and majesty of the omnipresent message of the past for present and future generations. This is today's Bardejov.
We believe that these aspects will also contribute to the success of this international conference and will contribute to the fact that you will share your rich knowledge and experience with each other at this conference for the benefit of those who need it most, that is, the patients who depend on your wisdom and professionalism. We will be very happy if we succeed in this goal and leave nice professional and social memories, and this is primarily our goal and the conferences in general.
Dear participants and readers of this collection, I believe that this conference of ours will fully fulfill its mission and the information, insights and knowledge will bring success and will be reflected in our next extremely demanding work in its entire context.
