PREFACE
In the collection, we present contributions from the 5th year of the international scientific conference entitled "Professional values of social work". The idea of organizing international conferences in Piešťany was born on the grounds of the Institute of Social Work of St. Pátra Pia in Piešťany University of Health and Social Work St. Alžbety in 2010. In this period, there was a lack of scientific discourse on the professional ethics of social work. The first conference in Piešťany was held on 20-21. October 2010 on the subject of Applied ethics in social work. With the designation "applied", the organizers wanted to emphasize the close connection between the theory and practice of social work. The aspiration was for the conference to be a space for dialogue between scientific academics on the one hand and professional social workers and students on the other. The added value of the first conference in Piešťany was the discussion of the older ethical code of social workers and subsequent practical steps towards the creation of a new ethical code.
Subsequent editions of Piešťan "applied conferences" were thematically focused on applied social pathology in social work, applied politics and again on applied ethics. The thematic focus of the conference held in 2017 returns to ethics, but with a narrower focus on the ethical values of the social work profession, as several organizers of the conference are also researchers of the VEGA scientific project aimed at identifying the professional values of social work in the Slovak Republic. In addition to ethical values, the main conference topics were professional values of social work and helping professions, ethical conditions of supervision, ethical decision-making, current bioethical problems and dilemmas of helping professions.
We believe that academic workers, university students, as well as the professional and lay public can find in the collection not only scientific knowledge, but also inspiration for improving the practice of social work, which we understand as a profession based on ethical values.
