The mission of the Slovak Public Health Association (SAVEZ) is to participate in the prevention of diseases, protection and promotion of the health of the inhabitants of Slovakia. The association works to increase interest and understanding in the field of public health through education, training and research; in the area of cooperation, it supports an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental approach.
One of the activities with which SAVEZ strives to fulfill its mission is the organization of conferences. We bring you a peer-reviewed collection of contributions from the 4th conference with international participation, which took place in Košice in 2011 under the title "Strengthening the Public Health System". Preface
On days 9-10 In June 2011, the 4th conference of the Slovak Public Health Association with international participation was held in Košice under the title "Strengthening the Public Health System". The main goal of the conference was to support the key role of public health in the process of developing the health of the population.
The conference was attended by representatives of state institutions, universities, non-governmental organizations, as well as invited foreign guests from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Great Britain. Co-organizers of the conference were: Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Slovakia, University of P.J. Šafárik in Košice – Institute of Public Health, Dept. of social medicine and Institute of Postgraduate Education KISH, Research Program Chronic Diseases.
At the conference, there were 5 main lectures, 20 lectures in four sections and 15 posters were presented. Individual sections were thematically focused on: Health status monitoring and socioeconomic indicators of health; Supporting the health of marginalized and immunocompromised persons; Health-related risk behavior and selected legislative measures; Mental health and quality of life in people with chronic illness. The presentations were included in the conference program on the basis of the previous assessment of the abstracts by the members of the scientific committee. For the first time, the conference was included among SACCME's credit-allocated events. Súčasťou konferencie boli aj tri workshopy. The V4 STEPS workshop was a continuation of SAVEZ cooperation within the European project STEPS - Strengthening involvement in research in the field of public health and took place with the participation of the project coordinator from Great Britain and project partners from Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Its aim was to create a space for the mutual exchange of information and examples of good practice in the field of public health research in the V4 countries and to seek opportunities for further international cooperation.
The BCA/WHO workshop was held as part of the fulfillment of the task resulting from the Two-year Cooperation Agreement (BCA) between the Ministry of Health of the Slovak Republic and the WHO Regional Office for Europe signed for the years 2010/2011. The aim of the workshop was to map the level, possibilities and form of cooperation of selected regional public health authorities in the Slovak Republic with higher territorial units, to discuss the previous experiences with this cooperation, and the current or future participation in existing plans for economic and social development of self-governing regions.
The Science Communication and Scientific Communication workshop was focused on the development of skills to write scientific articles and publish them in scientific (S)SCI journals and also on the development of skills on how to prepare a PowerPoint / poster presentation.
During the entire conference, experts together with invited representatives of state institutions, local government and non-governmental organizations had the opportunity to discuss new possibilities for interdisciplinary, interdepartmental and international cooperation in the field of policy, education, research and performance of public health.
