Introduction: Minimally invasive surgical techniques are a modern operative approach that allows the surgeon to operate through a limited number and size of incisions. This provides benefits mainly for the patient in terms of less postoperative pain, faster discharge from hospitalization, and shorter convalescence. It has only a minimal number of contraindications, and its advantages compared with classic open surgery are indisputable. Abdominal minimally invasive surgery has continued to develop since its beginnings, and today, in addition to the "conventional" laparoscopic approach, single-port surgery, natural-orifice surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery are also used. The purpose of this professional text is to familiarize the reader with the history and current state of minimally invasive surgery, present individual operative approaches, emphasize its advantages over open surgery, and also point out its limitations. A special chapter is devoted to robotic surgery as the newest trend with a promising future. The second part of the textbook shows the specifics of nursing care in the preoperative and postoperative periods; it also addresses communication, psychological support, and patient education for patients undergoing this type of procedure. It has just the small number of contraindications and the benefits are indisputable in comparison with classic open approach. Abdominal minimally invasive surgery is still evolving from its early roots, and we nowadays place single-port and natural orifices approaches as well as a robotic-assisted surgeries side by side to the “conventional” laparoscopy. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a reader to the history and the present of the minimally invasive surgery, to highlight the advantages over the open approach and to refer to its limitations. We dedicated the separate chapter to robotic surgery as the newest trend with a promising future. The second part of the textbook shows the specifics of the preoperative and postoperative care, as well as the communication, mental support and education of the patient undergoing the exact type of procedure.
