FOREWORD
The scientific monograph was developed within project „Setting Staff Management Processes in Hospitals and Their Impact on the Migration of Doctors and Nurses Seeking Work Abroad,“ APVV-19-0579, which was funded by the Slovak Research and Development Agency. In writing the monograph, we drew on the latest knowledge and available information that addresses generational theory. The monograph synthesizes findings from scientific research, experience from pedagogical and educational processes, and nursing practice, and helps the reader become oriented in the topic of generational diversity. From the broad field of generational theory, for the purposes of this monograph’s content focus, we selected the X, Y, and Z generational cohorts, but we also present the characteristics of the Baby Boomers and Alpha generations. The characteristics of each generation cannot be accepted literally, as people born at the beginning or end of the years defined for a given generation have some traits from the previous or following generation. While reviewing the literature we found inconsistency in the birth years stated for individual generational cohorts, so we opted for the most commonly used classification.
The author’s aim was to present new, up-to-date knowledge primarily about Generation Z, because nurses belonging to this cohort will significantly influence the delivery of high-quality and safe nursing care, the nursing profession, communication at the workplace, and practice management itself. By implementing strategies and measures for generationally diverse nursing teams, healthcare facility management can retain nurses and offer them benefits that for that generation are strong motivational tools for staying in the profession. The new age cohort of the workforce brings changes in work dynamics and organizational culture that will affect both organizations and employees. Because of the specific characteristics and behavior of the newest generation entering the labor market, managing Generation Z in the workplace is a challenge. By 2040, employees from Generation Z will be dominant in workplaces. The future of nursing management anticipates a major transformation. Planning the provision of nursing care will, from a futurological perspective, require new and strong nurse leadership. Generation Z nurses have specific expectations regarding work, and if those are not met, they will leave the profession. The current and anticipated global shortage of nurses, together with economic, political, and social factors affecting nursing care delivery, emphasize the necessity of effective management of multigenerational nursing teams. By using the bibliographic references, the reader can expand the knowledge already gained.
I wish readers would find the scientific monograph a sought-after aid in studying nursing, in preparing for professional practice, but especially in nursing practice itself, thereby contributing to improved care for patients.
